With the year winding down, the Mediavine Brand Team has been looking back on the multitude of events our company has been a part of in 2019, and one of our favorites was MVCon Austin, held in November.

I moved to Central Texas 14 years ago, so of course I was thrilled to be holding a Mediavine conference in my proverbial backyard.

From the gorgeous (and teal-decorated) Fairmont Hotel to the yummy food to our wonderful sponsors, every moment of the conference was a thrill.

We opened the conference with perfect weather and a view of downtown Austin at the Fairmont’s Rules & Regs bar.

We served up signature Mediavine cocktails while everyone mingled and met new blogging friends.

A cocktail with the Mediavine logo on top of the fizz in edible paper.

Because it’s Austin, tacos were on the menu (anyone else obsessed with cauliflower tacos now?) but that didn’t stop folks for heading out to eat even MORE tacos after the reception!

Our first full day of the conference kicked off with our CEO Eric Hochberger, providing a glimpse into the future of Mediavine.

He also announced our exciting new product, Grow!

The opening keynote, Marie Denee, brought her trademark style to the stage as she inspired the attendees on how to scale their businesses beyond blogs.

Mediavine Convention attendees.

Ashish Kalsi from Google gave an enlightening talk on site security and how you can make your site more secure, while Betsy Eves and Kay Featherstone gave a crash course in RPM hacks, turning their session into a hands-on brainstorm for attendees.

During lunch, we played host bingo with return sponsor Agathon and afterward Maegan Carberry took to the stage to chat about personal branding.

Looking to expand to traditional media?

Amanda Berlin shared her expertise on pitching media outlets to not only expand your reach but to further position yourself as a content expert.

The rain didn’t stop us from enjoying our networking break before heading back in to hear legal expert Jamie Lieberman discuss how to approach the finer details of sponsored work.

Mediavine Convention attendees.

Finally, we ended the day with the hilarious and empowering Tiffany Romero of Sway Group. We walked out of the ballroom feeling pumped!

Friday morning opened with a talk from Jordan Cauley and Heather Tullos on our plugin Create, and then attendees were welcome to attend breakout sessions, the expo hall or meet with the Mediavine team for site support.

The Vendor Hall at MVCon 2019.
MVCon 2019 attendees.

There were so many wonderful sessions to attend on Friday — the only thing I don’t like about being the event coordinator is that I don’t get to see most of them!

In the morning we had Andy Dehnart on keeping the passion alive, Kate Ahl covering your Pinterest audience, Danny Ozment chatting about podcasting, Urvashi Pitre on batch content creation, Dan Bagby discussing SEO and Rachelle Lucas helping us understand how to pitch sponsored travel.

How to find your person on Pinterest presentation at MVCon 2019

WHEW! It was a busy morning.

Over lunch, sponsor Rubicon helped attendees learn more about how ad buys work, and what you can do to make your site more appealing to advertisers.

In the afternoon Andrew Wilder discussed the importance of accessibility and how to make your site easier to use for everyone, while Lia Garcia covered how to create post campaign wrap reports that will have brands coming back to you again and again.

MVCon 2019 attendees taking notes at sessions.

For our final session of the conference, we came back together to hear from Brandi Riley of the wildly popular Facebook Group Courage to Earn. She talked about how to apply your mindset to your everyday actions and move your business forward with confidence.

If you’ve ever heard Brandi speak, it’s impossible to not come away inspired!

Mediavine conferences always end with a party, and even though temperatures were getting chilly again (for Austin) we had a blast at the indoor/outdoor venue Springdale Station, sponsored by Perdue Farms.

The infamous Mediavine giant Jenga set.

Dinner was a spread of hits from The Peached Tortilla, and Dulce Vida provided excellent paloma cocktails.

We also had sweet tea mules and plenty of Austin Eastciders in a variety of flavors and Lagunitas beers.

To cap off the incredible week, the Mediavine team, sponsors and attendees alike hopped in front of the microphone for karaoke.

Let’s just say there was a lot of dancing and grooving going on!

MVCon 2019 attendees

Every Mediavine conference is an absolute thrill to put together, and we can’t wait for you to see all that we have in store for 2020.

Don’t forget that tickets to our biggest event yet, MVCon20, are on sale right now and you won’t want to miss out on all the learning, connections and fun!

See you in Baltimore next June.

Are you an expert in something useful to digital content creators? (Yes, this question is incredibly broad and we mean it to be because… 🙂

We’re searching for speakers for the largest Mediavine Conference yet — our 2020 event in Baltimore June 3-5. (We’ll be on the harbor, they’ve got baseball/historical sites/National Aquarium and they put crab on EVERYTHING. It’ll be rad.)

The Baltimore Harbor

Question: What kinds of sessions are you interested in?

Short Answer: ALL KINDS

Longer Answer: It sounds hokey, but we really are passionate about helping content creators build sustainable businesses. So we put a ton of time and energy into our educational offerings including the blog, Lives, other videos and our conference sessions. We try to make learning easy and accessible for as many people as possible, so all sessions from our conferences are edited and put up on our YouTube channel, making them available to everyone, not just conference attendees.

In terms of specific session topics, we love the obvious fits: Pagespeed, plugin audits, SEO, photography, video, content optimization, podcasting, productivity workflows, etc.

We also love the less obvious choices like public relations, legal for influencers, licensing, product creation, finance/taxes for bloggers, VAs (hiring and/or becoming one), creating media kits, landing speaking gigs, etc.

Honestly, we’re open to anything that makes life easier and better for our industry and the people in it, including single-speaker sessions, panels, and workshops.

Have you developed an awesome way to stay physically fit and relaxed through your form of desktop yoga? SUBMIT IT.

The big key for us is action items. Our attendees want to walk out of a session (or, let’s be real, sit during the session) with a list of things to immediately begin working on. Even if your topic is more inspirational and woo woo, it needs to be actionably expressed.

For the first time in 2020, we’re offering learning tracks. One track will be for people who are in the beginning stages of their blogging/monetization journey and the other will be for more advanced influencers.

2020 is Mediavine’s fourth year of annual conferences, following some pretty excellent events in Charleston in 2017, at the Google campus in Sunnyvale, California, in 2018 and in Chicago and Austin in 2019.

Wire letters reading "MVP"

For a sampling of past speakers, visit the Mediavine YouTube channel. All of our previous conference sessions are available to watch anytime.

So now that you’re convinced, what’s next???

Get all your ducks in a row, put together a detailed speaking proposal and APPLY RIGHT HERE! The Mediavine Brand team will be accepting applications through Friday, November 20th, 2019.

Good morning, Baltimore!

That’s what we’ll be singing every day from June 3–5, 2020 when we’re in town for the FIFTH Mediavine conference!

We’ve already been to Charleston, San Jose and Chicago, and soon we will be in Austin for our second event of 2019. We’re extremely excited to add the Charm City to the growing list.

Baltimore skyline.

Why Baltimore?

We picked Baltimore for the fifth Mediavine Conference because it is a thriving, bustling city. It’s home to great food (hello, crabcakes!), a creative hub and lots of history.

Both conference lodging and learning will take place at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, located in the heart of the Baltimore harbor.

The hotel is just a 7-minute walk from the National Aquarium and just around the corner from attractions like historic Fells Point and Camden Yards.

Eric speaking at MVCon 2019 in Chicago.

What is the Mediavine Influencers Conference?

Our annual Mediavine conferences are a chance for publishers — whether they’re with Mediavine for full-service ad management or not — to connect with each other, with sponsors, with Mediavine team members, and so much more.

With tracks for both beginner and advanced bloggers, the 2020 Mediavine Influencers Conference will continue to leverage those connections to help publishers take their blogs to the next level in sales, marketing, videography and more.

At #MVCON20, we will continue our mission to help our publishers and content creators build sustainable businesses.

Here’s a recap of our latest conference in Chicago:

Check out our YouTube Channel to see some of our past sessions and speakers. We have announced some speakers already and even more will be announced soon!

Will there be two conferences in 2020?

While we loved having two conferences in 2019, for 2020 we are focusing on the single, larger event in Baltimore. We hope you’ll join us!

When do tickets go on sale?

You can expect early bird tickets to go on sale in November 2019, and regular price tickets to go on sale in December 2019. Check out our Eventbrite page for more details on ticket sales.

We will offer several types of tickets:

  • 2-Day Passes
Includes two full days of sessions June 4 & 5, Wednesday opening reception, Friday closing party and daytime meals.
  • 3-Day Passes
Three full days of learning! Includes access to a full day of hands-on workshops with the Mediavine team on Wednesday, June 3; two days of sessions June 4 & 5; Wednesday opening reception; Friday closing party; and daytime meals.
  • Brand tickets
For brands, marketers, & agencies. Ticket includes all conference sessions June 4 & 5, parties and daytime meals.

And yes, there will be a waitlist in the event tickets sell out!

Here’s how the waitlist works: If tickets are sold out on Eventbrite, the Waitlist option will be triggered. Fill out the waitlist form on Eventbrite. If a ticket becomes available, you will receive an email from Eventbrite. You will have 24 hours to purchase the ticket. If you do not purchase the ticket in time, it will be released to the next person in line.

We hope to see you in Baltimore next June! Learn more about our event on our Mediavine Influencers Conference Baltimore page.

Texas has been my home for the past 14 years. With the practically non-stop sunshine and distinct lack of snow, it is quite the opposite from my years growing up in the Midwest. (If you’re going to visit the Midwest, the summer is the best time! We had a blast there in June for the first MVCon of 2019 in Chicago.)

We’ve embraced all that central Texas has to offer, and I couldn’t be more excited to be bringing the Mediavine Conference to Austin!

If you’re attending the conference or visiting Austin separately, here are some of my favorite places to eat and things to do.

The Austin city skyline.

Austin To-Do List

Visiting Austin for MVCon or just on your own? Check out a few of our recommendations for where to eat and things to do!

Where to Eat

Austin is known for its restaurant culture, outspending nearly every other city to enjoy all that it has to offer. While Austin has become synonymous with food trucks, the dining scene is so much more than that. Below are just a few of our favorites.

What to Do

Have some free time to go exploring? Check out a few of these places.

No matter where you end up, Austin is full of incredible experiences. If you can’t make it in person to the Mediavine Conference, we’ll be videoing and sharing all the sessions, just like always. Subscribe to the Mediavine YouTube channel today.

Are you an expert in something useful to digital content creators? Are you jonesing to see the Windy City in the summer or play your part to keep Austin weird in the fall?

We started in Charleston in 2017.

We followed that up with a trip to the Google headquarters in California in 2018.

And next year, we’re upping our game again. That’s right, you read it in the post title, you saw it on the Live reveal, there will be TWO MEDIAVINE CONFERENCES IN 2019!

A collage of Chicago landmarks, around a block of text reading "Mediavine Conference - June 12 14, 2020 - Chicago"

The first one will be held in the Windy City, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Save the date for June 12-14, 2019.

We don’t need to convince you Chicago is where we need to be, as this Second City was your first choice in several conference location surveys that we did.

The Bean in Chicago.

Summer in Chicago is magic. Beaches, baseball, festivals, concerts and rooftop bars around every corner.

Plus world class art, museums, comedy, food, 2 international airports and easy, affordable transit in the city on the El.

And for our second 2019 conference, we’re heading where everything’s bigger. Tacos, live music, hair and belt buckles.

A collage of Texan-themed items around a block of text reading "Mediavine Conference - November 6 - 8, 2020 - Austin"

We’re thrilled to take our clear eyes and full hearts to the Lone Star State, where we know we can’t lose in AUSTIN, TEXAS. It’ll probably be too warm for our hipster flannel, even on November 6-8, 2019, but we’ll suffer through.

The capitol of Texas is also home to the SXSW Festival, Austin City Limits, the flagship Whole Foods and the University of Texas plus all the BBQ, tacos, food trucks, an awesome culture for creative entrepreneurs and BATS! Texas forever, y’all.

Bats fly out from beneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, TX.

We couldn’t be more excited about our two 2019 locations, which we chose after conducting publisher surveys, research and lots of internal fighting healthy discussion.

You might be asking yourself, why the heck is Mediavine doing two conferences in only their third year?

Short answer: We cray.

Longer answer: After selling out of 2018 conference tickets in under 60 seconds, we knew we had a demand that was greater than our supply.

A large mural of the word "Austin", with landmarks of the capitol city inside the letters, and the Capitol building beneath.

We were committed to providing more opportunities for our publishers to attend a Mediavine conference, without losing the intimate and highly curated experience that we’ve become known for.

The only solution to this problem that we saw was adding an additional conference in 2019.

Two intimate conferences (125 tickets available for each) with similar content, making it possible for 250 different Mediavine publishers to attend a conference in 2019. We’re also working on ways to sponsor and plan additional events across the country and even globally, because we want to see ALL your faces!

A large, lit-up sign reading "Chicago" over a theatre entrance.

New to 2019, ticket sales will be staggered, aiming for buying convenience for different time zones. PLUS, we’re reserving a number of tickets for first-time attendees.

Bottom line, we heard you and we’re doing everything we can to improve and provide more opportunities moving forward.

The Chicago city skyline.

Now for the important question: WHEN DO TICKETS GO ON SALE?!?

Tickets for the Chicago conference ONLY will go on sale in waves in November:

Stage 1: November 15, 2018, 12:00pm EST (35 regular, 15 newbie)
Stage 2: November 19, 2018 8pm EST (35 regular, 15 newbie)
Stage 3: November 21, 2018 10am EST (30 regular, 20 newbie)

Here’s our preliminary conference FAQ, which we’ll be fleshing out with details as they come. We’ll absolutely share the ticket sale dates for Austin once we decide them.

Important note: Because we are trying to enable as many different publishers to attend as possible, you will only be allowed to attend ONE of the 2019 conferences.

P gather to swim in Austin, TX.

Well, there you have it. Two conferences in 2019 and we can’t hardly wait. But really we can, because we have A LOT of planning to do. Until then, catch all the session videos from our last two conferences on our YouTube channel.

If you’re interested in potentially speaking at either of the 2019 conferences, please email Conference Organizer (and Mother of Dragons) Megan Myers at megan@mediavine.com with your detailed pitch.

If you’re interested in sponsoring one or both of our conferences, or know of a sponsor who we’d love to work with, please email Director of Influencer Marketing Stephie Predmore at stephie@mediavine.com.

Everyone else, stand by for details like venues, hotels and fun goodies like architecture boat tours on the Chicago River.

If you want to watch our on-location reveal on Facebook Live, it’s here.

When we last left you, MVCon18 day 1 was in the books, leaving our heads, hearts and bellies full of learning, love and tasty food and drink. What went where? You decide!

On Friday morning, we headed back to the Google campus for another day of conference excitement.

Google has been working to have sites focus on mobile functions, so we were lucky to have Cheney Tsai, Google Mobile Solutions Consultant, kick off our day with a session on mobile user experience. The bottom line? Make sure you think about making your sites fast and efficient in addition to beautiful!

Next up was Joanne Ozug of Fifteen Spatulas, who delivered a killer presentation on getting yourself ready to be in front of the camera. Most of us are used to being behind it, but as blogs grow, so does the demand for an authority on your brand and TV is a great way to make yourself be heard. From local stations to nationally syndicated shows, there are plenty of options to consider. Joanne broke down how to get yourself comfortable with TV cameras, how to pitch for shows, and just how much money you can expect from that time under the set lights. We can’t wait to see how you all put her advice into practice!

MVCoin attendees taking notes on phones and laptop computers.

If you’ve been running a blog for any length of time, you know that there are plenty of legal implications that come along with it, from trademarking your site name to contract negotiations with brands. Fortunately, we had Jamie Lieberman of Hashtag Legal, and blogger Julie Blanner on hand to talk about these issues from both sides of the equation. Having protections in place will not only save you a headache down the road, it will potentially save (and earn) you a lot of money, too, so don’t neglect those legal tasks on your to-do list.

After lunch, marketing experts Jenny Guy and Stephie Predmore stepped up for their session on how to make brands love you. Working with brands is a goal for many, many bloggers. Are you pitching them correctly? Make sure you do your research ahead of time so brands will be eager to hit “reply” to your email. Watch the full session on the Mediavine YouTube channel.

Are you confused about how your blog works? Don’t know your FTP from your CDN? We had Peter Green of Agathon, Andrew Wilder of Blog Tutor, Lauren Gray of Once Coupled, and Mediavine’s own Brad Hagmann on the stage to chat about what you actually should know about what’s running under your blog’s hood. Led by moderator Julie Deily of The Little Kitchen, the group discussed what kind of functions are essential to a well-running blog, and shared tips on how to DIY or hire them out. Don’t miss a tip; watch the full session here!

Our last session had to be postponed due to family circumstances, but we still learned all about Facebook Groups from expert Kay of the U.K. blog Pinch of Nom. Leveraging Facebook Live, we talked about how to run your own Facebook Group and how it can be used to increase blog traffic. The Facebook Live is posted on the Mediavine YouTube, so you can get all her tips here.

Wine being poured into a glass.

We ended things with a delectable dinner at Thomas Fogarty Winery, paired with their excellent wines (of course!) While the weather certainly didn’t do us any favors, the evening with new friends was a perfect finale for the 2nd Mediavine Publishers Conference.

A sampling of different dinner options, from the salad, to the main course, to a dessert plate.

We heard that the party didn’t stop there for some of our attendees, but the conference team headed off for a well-deserved night of sleep before we all parted ways on Saturday. We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again in 2019!
